For grown-ups

These are the common exception words from the national curriculum for England: 45 for Year 1 and 64 for Year 2. They are common words with a tricky part that does not follow the usual phonics rules, like the ai in said.

If the browser can speak, your child hears the word, then a sentence, then the word again, just like a spelling test. If it cannot, they see the sentence with a gap and the number of letters, so you can read the word to them. Peek shows the word for three seconds: look, cover, write, check.

After two tries the answer is shown, and your child types it once more to help remember it. Little and often works best: one round of ten a day.
