Where should this child start?
Up to 20 picture, listening and reading questions, five at a time, with a grown-up beside the child. It stops as soon as it finds the right place to begin and suggests a level and a starting week.
How the scoring works
Four parts
Part 1 samples Level 0 (first words), Part 2 Level 1, Part 3 Level 2 and Part 4 Level 3. Each part has five questions: eight of the twenty are listening questions and twelve are reading questions.
Pass mark
A part is comfortable at 4 out of 5 or more. The check stops at the first part below 4 and suggests that level. If all four parts are comfortable, it suggests the last term of Level 3.
Starting week
Within the suggested level: 0 or 1 correct starts at week 1, 2 correct at week 7, 3 correct at week 13.
Questions are shuffled each time. The check also compares listening with reading and tells you if one is clearly behind the other.
Using it well
- Sit beside the child. For young children, you may read the question aloud, but tell them it is not a test.
- Turn the sound on. If sound is not available, each listening question has a short text a grown-up can read aloud.
- Do not teach during the check. If the child is stuck, let them guess and move on.
- Treat the result as a screening aid. Confirm it with the one-to-one check on the level page, and move the child up or down after the first review week if it was wrong.
- Pictures are simple symbols for now. Illustrated questions in the house style are planned.
Privacy
The check runs entirely in this page. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored on the device and no cookies are used. If you want a record, use the copy or print buttons on the result.
