Materials

Step by step, with teacher talk

0 to 5 minWarm-up: guess my holiday

  1. Mime swimming, then camping, then taking photos. Children guess: "You're going to swim!"
  2. Write the first sentence on the board as a model.
Teacher talk

"This summer I'm going to... (mime). Yes, I'm going to swim. Where? At the beach."

5 to 17 minForm: going to

  1. Write on the board: I'm going to visit / She isn't going to fly / Are they going to swim? Colour am/is/are, going to and the base verb in three colours.
  2. Point out that after going to we use the base verb: going to swim, not going to swimming.
  3. Say that in fast speech people say "gonna", but we write going to.
  4. Chain drill: you say "I'm going to swim." The next child changes one thing: "I'm going to climb." Move round the class.
Concept-check questions
  • "I'm going to swim tomorrow." Is it a plan or something that happened? (A plan.)
  • Do we say "going to swimming"? (No: going to swim.)
  • Short answer to "Are you going to fly?" if you are taking a train. (No, I'm not.)

17 to 27 minReading: Last day of term

  1. First reading: "Where is Thiri going? How is she going?" Then pairs read aloud and swap roles.
  2. Pairs underline all going to phrases in one colour.

27 to 35 minControlled practice

  1. Children complete tasks 1 and 2 alone. Check in pairs, then as a class.

35 to 50 minSpeaking: dream trip

  1. Model with one child: "Where are you going to go?" "How are you going to travel?" "Who are you going to take?" "What are you going to do?"
  2. Pairs take turns to ask the four questions and fill in task 3.
  3. After five minutes swap partners and tell the new partner your partner's plan: "Min is going to...".

55 to 60 minExit ticket

  1. See below.

Differentiation

Support

  • Give sentence starters: "I'm going to... / I'm going to travel by... / I'm not going to..."
  • Pairs use the picture cards instead of choosing their own place.

Stretch

  • Add a reason: "I'm going to take a torch because we're going to explore a cave."
  • Use "I think it's going to..." for predictions: "I think it's going to rain."
  • Role-play a phone call with a friend who asks about the trip.

Dialogue

Dialogue: Last day of term

Leo: It's the last day of term! Are you going away this summer, Thiri?

Thiri: Yes! We're going to visit my grandparents by the sea.

Leo: Lucky you! How are you going to get there?

Thiri: We're going to take the train, and then a bus. It's going to take six hours.

Leo: Six hours! What are you going to do there?

Thiri: I'm going to swim every day. My cousin and I are going to have a sandcastle competition. And Grandpa is going to teach me to fish.

Leo: Are you going to take a camera?

Thiri: No, I'm not going to take a camera, but I'm going to take my sketchbook.

Leo: Nice. I'm not going anywhere, but I'm going to learn to skateboard in the park.

Thiri: Cool! Are you going to be good at it?

Leo: I'm going to fall off a lot first, I think!
