Step by step, with teacher talk
0 to 5 minWarm-up: the food bag
- Show each picture and say the word. Children repeat. Ask "Is it a fruit?" for apples only if it helps.
- Pause on each and ask children to make a face for yum or yuck.
"This is pizza. Pizza! Do you like pizza? Show me your face."
5 to 15 minTeach I like and I don't like
- Hold the smiling face. "I like pizza." Hold the sad face. "I don't like fish." Children copy with the faces and a thumbs up or down.
- Say eight sentences about the food cards, mixing like and don't like. Children say the sentence and show a thumb.
- Teach the question: "Do you like pizza?" Answer with "Yes, I do" (thumbs up) or "No, I don't" (thumbs down).
"I like pizza. I don't like fish. Do you like pizza? Yes, I do. No, I don't."
- (Sad face.) Do I like fish? (No.) What do I say? (I don't like fish.)
- "Do you like cake?" Is the answer yes or no? (Child chooses.) What do you say? (Yes, I do / No, I don't.)
15 to 23 minStand up, sit down
- Call a food. Children who like it stand up and say "I like (food)." Children who don't stay seated and say "I don't like (food)."
- Notice differences: "Kofi likes fish and Leo doesn't like fish." (Teacher only; children use I.)
23 to 33 minReading and listening: Priya and Leo
- Read the dialogue aloud twice. First time children listen, second time they underline the foods.
- Ask the comprehension questions. Then read it in pairs, swapping roles.
- Does Priya like fish? (No.) Does Leo like rice? (Yes.) Who likes pizza? (Both of them.)
33 to 45 minClass survey
- Model the survey with a child: "Do you like pizza?" "Yes, I do." Tick the box.
- Children move around and ask three friends each three questions. In a big class, they ask three neighbours.
- Collect the answers on the board: "Pizza: 14 yes, 6 no." Read some as a class.
"Ask three friends. Do you like pizza? Do you like fish? Do you like apples? Tick yes or no."
45 to 55 minWorksheet: my favourite food
- Do the first row of the table together. Children complete task 2 alone. They do the survey in task 3 with two friends.
55 to 60 minExit ticket
- See the exit ticket. Take answers from each child at the door.
