Plain printing advice

How to print these PDFs well and cheaply.

Every PDF is A4 and works in black and white. A few settings make them print at the right size and use less paper.

The four settings that matter

  1. Scale: 100% or Actual size. Do not choose Fit to page. The files already have 10 mm margins. Fit to page can shrink cards so they no longer match their backs.
  2. Paper size: A4. The certificates are landscape: choose Landscape or Auto. The pocket booklets are A5.
  3. Colour: black and white or greyscale. Everything is designed for it. The only exceptions are colour swatches in the colour flashcards and colour bingo, which print as grey. Children can colour them in with crayons.
  4. Double-sided: flip on the long edge for flashcards (so each picture lands in front of its word). Check with one test sheet before you print a class set.

Saving paper and ink

  • Print double-sided wherever you can: a ten-page activity pack is five sheets.
  • Choose the draft or toner-save mode. The pages are drawn in thin outlines with no solid fills, so they stay readable.
  • Print one set of cards or games per group of four to six, not one per child.
  • Laminate or slide into plastic wallets so the same sheet can be used for years.
  • Photocopying works well: there is nothing in the files that depends on colour or screen tones.

Printing the A5 pocket booklets

Choose A5 paper if you have it. Otherwise print on A4 with Pages per sheet set to 2: two A5 pages fit on one A4 sheet, which you then cut in half or fold. Four A4 sheets give one eight-page booklet.

Cutting and making

  • Dashed lines are cutting lines. Cut a whole sheet at once with a guillotine or craft knife, away from children, or let children use scissors on the cards.
  • Thin card (160 gsm) is best for cards, dominoes and dice. Paper is fine for worksheets.
  • If the card is too thick for your printer, print on paper and glue onto card before cutting.

If a PDF does not look right

Open it in a browser's built-in viewer or a current PDF reader. The fonts are embedded, so it should look the same everywhere. If cards do not line up front and back, switch the flip edge between long and short and try again with one test sheet.

Limited printing or no internet at school?

See the offline packs: a print checklist for each level, and a low-ink A5 booklet. There is no zip file: you download a list of PDFs, or a few chosen ones.
