Symbols on UK and US keyboards

Lesson twenty. Some symbols are in different places on UK and US keyboards. On a UK keyboard, speech marks are on the 2 key and the at sign is next to the semicolon. The keyboard picture always shows you where to go.

Tip: On a UK keyboard: speech marks are Shift and 2, the pound sign is Shift and 3, and the at sign is Shift and the apostrophe key. On a US keyboard the at sign and speech marks swap places.

Ready? Sit up tall with your feet flat, put your fingers on the home row, and look at the screen, not your hands. Have a break after about 15 minutes.

The typing tutor needs JavaScript switched on in your browser.

For grown-ups

There are 4 short exercises. The tutor waits for the right key, so mistakes cannot pile up, and it shows accuracy and words per minute at the end of each one. The mini test is passed at 90% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark unless you switch on Speed goals (goal for this lesson: 10 words per minute). Progress is saved only in this browser.

The practice text in this lesson:

  1. Warm-up: !! "" ££ @@ ## -- ::
  2. Words: wow! "hi" £2 #1 well-done 9:15
  3. Sentence: Mum said, "The bus leaves at 9:15!"
  4. Mini test: Cakes cost £1 each. Order #12 had 4 cakes: that is £4. "Yum!" said Priya. Sam wrote "3 cakes @ £1" on a well-made sign.
